Iron Age Danube Route

The cultural route which introduces the Danube iron age culture was established by four
countries and received the certification of the Council of Europe in 2021. This route represents an
extremely fragile but awesome prehistorical archaeological phenomenon: the iron age landscape,
which is also of interest to the general public. The remains of the iron age (BC 9-1 century)
consist of monumental constructions of the locals (Hallstatt, Celtic, Scythian civilizations), e.g.
fortified settlements, burial mound cemeteries, flat graveyards, and complex organization of
space. The extraordinary archaeological finds can be seen in museums, archaeological parks and
open-air exhibitions. Thanks to the modern technology, visitors can gain insight into the life of
BC 1 millennium’s prehistoric people. The Hungarian stations of the route are: Velem, Sopron,
Süttő, Százhalombatta; the collection of the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest and Esztergom.
