European Route of Historic Thermal Towns

The EHTTA received the European Cultural Routs certificate in 2010.

After the ancient times, the spa culture became popular again in the late 18 century. In the beginning, only wealthy aristocrats, politics and the members of the cultural elites could effort a visit these places. Thanks to them casinos, cafés and restaurants; the concert and theatre life started to flourish. The most famous spa towns are Baden-Baden, (Germany), Budapest (Hungary), Karsbade (today Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic), Vichy (France) etc. The spas determined the architect and style of these cities. The multicolour spa culture is a real European heritage.
The Budapest Spas Ltd. (which operate most of the baths in Budapest) joined to the European association in 2010 which also means the connection to the Cultural Routes of the European historical spa cities.
In Budapest, the visitors can choose between the indoor and outdoor spas, which mineral water was used by the ancient Romans and the Muslim invaders as well.
In Budapest, the visitors can meet not only the remains of these old spa cultures but they can also enjoy the vibrant cultural and gastronomic life of the capital.
In 2019 an event of the Gellért Spa was granted as the best practice of the European Cultural Routes.
